Review of A Star Is Born (1954) by Ricardo O — 16 Jun 2011
This movie is fantastic! As much as I do love Grace Kelly, Judy Garland was robbed of her Oscar that year. Her performance is funny, delightful, and so heartbreaking at the same time. Brilliant performance! Sure it has some flaws, mostly for it's length but even then there isn't a scene that I'd cut.
Judy Garland gives what may be her greatest performance of a distinguished career and James Mason also gives one of his most dynamic performances. I don't consider this a true musical, more a showbiz melodrama with a few songs so Garland can show off her singing.
But no matter what, it's a must-see movie for movie fans. It still ranks as one of the great musicals and one of the greatest films in general from the cinematography, art direction, costumes, writing, direction, and most of all the acting.
Loved this movie. 10/10.
