Review of A Shot in the Dark (1964) by Scott P — 20 Nov 2007
A Shot in the Dark is slapstick at its best. Originally filmed before the Pink Pather, this is the second in the series ,but the first to use Peter Sellers character, Inspector Clouseau as the lead. Due to studio interference, they deemed the film to be unfunny and shelved the picture until the suprise success of "The Pink Panther" changed their minds. The film was immediately released and became a box office and cult classic.
"A Shot in the Dark" is also first to feature, Clouseau's assistant Kato and Dreyfess who cannot stand Sellers.
The film is brilliant at comedy, with excellent timing by director Blake Edwards and Peter Sellers. Even the screenplay by William Peter Blatty is great! Yes, he's the guy that wrote "the Exorcist". Wouldn't have guessed that? The film is based off a stage play so some of the scenes seem very stage like.
Overall, the movie pays attention to its serious points ,but always throws a joke or two at us. Several sequences are worth mentioning even when the Inspector investigates a nudest colony! If there's any Pink Panther-ish film you need to see, Its "a Shot in the Dark".
