Review of A Short Film About Love (1988) by Max M — 21 Aug 2008
A young postal worker by day, and voyeur by night, and his visual relations and meeting with a woman whose boyfriend appears to resemble a young philip roth, thick hair and all, does not sound like the foundation of a good film, but then most films aren't written and directed by kieslowski.
the film is deeply affecting, human, depressing and probing, and it includes the completely unromantic turn of events in which an action irrevocably alters how two human beings interact with each other.
all ten of the dekalog films are very good, with several achieving 4 and 5-star excellence, despite some uneveness. this was only one of two on the database, but they are all worthwhile -- especially the short film dealing with a girl and her step-father, father, boyfriend whose title I have forgotten.
that film cemented the already cemented reputation of the director for me. don't superimpose the ten commandment themes too directly onto these films -- they are more loose thematic explorations than direct allegories or moral tales.
