Review of A Serious Man (2009) by Jorden W — 02 Oct 2011
I was disappointed in this Coen brothers effort. This was a version of American Beauty but heavily laced with Judaism teachings and set in the late 60â(TM)s. Stuhlbarg fails to deliver in his first starring role as Professor Gopnik (this filmâ(TM)s Lester Burnham).
The script is dark with clever and subtle hidden witticisms. A handful of scenes with obscure characters and the professorâ(TM)s responses to awkward situations are noteworthy, but were not enough to fulfill its potential.
