Review of A Serious Man (2009) by Justin V — 09 Jan 2012
This is a bizarre and troubling film that's more relatable than one might think. joel & ethan coen, the men that have brought to audiences some unforgettable films ranging from deadly serious to uncannily zany, bring forth their most personal film. in addition "a serious man" may be their most personal.
In a story similar to the Book of Job, "a serious man" is one man's battle against life. professionally and personally nothing is going well for him and to top it off this man can't find the answers. all he can do is cope, adjust and try to move on.
Michael stuhlbarg is incredible as larry gopnik, and he plays the role with enough maturity and gumption so as to not come off as whiny or hopeless. his station in life is hopeless but seemingly he's not.
The film is cryptic and nothing is spelled out for the viewer but that uncertainty is one of the many things that makes the overall story relative and universal. not for the casual viewer, but for cinephiles it is a classic.
