Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Phil N — 13 Oct 2010
An ex-porn star is persuaded to come out of retirement for a maverick director's latest project - except there's no script and he's told to improvise everything. Which is worrying as the new film is heading to some dark, dark places.
.. With nearly 4 minutes of cuts demanded by the BBFC, A Serbian Film is the current hot potato. Surprisingly well made and acted, there's no denying its power to shock and the extreme nature of some scenes which are simply vile, but is it making a political statement as the directors attest? I'm not convinced - for me this is pure exploitation filmmaking at its best/worst.
