Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Paul G — 27 Nov 2010
Utterly depraved. Sickening. Gut-wrenching. Horrifying in the extreme. Inhuman. Hellish. These are the minus' for a film that beggars belief; a film that, by rights, really shouldn't be granted with a cinema release.
Now for the pluses! Beautifully filmed. Brilliantly acted. My impression of this Satanic piece of work is of a Carravagio painting come to life, and believe me, that is a compliment! Had this film been just another sleaze fest with terrible acting, and gore for gore's sake, I would have: 1. Not even watched it, and 2: Urged you all to never seek this thing out and have to endure what I did.
However, A Serbian Film is a bona fide, mainstream piece of cinema that will surely go down as the most depressing, morally-screwed up, hypnotically terrifying work of cinema I've seen EVER (and, remember, I've seen Martyrs!).
See it if you really must, and if you have the stomach for it.
Personally speaking...I wish I had a time machine so I could rewind 90 minutes of my life. Yes, the film is beautifully made, just like I said, but its content is abominable. It will take me days to get over this one.
I loathe it and admire it in equal measures, and I hope I never have to watch it again.
EVER!
