Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Izaak D — 18 Jan 2011
Oh boy. to say this is a disturbing film is putting it very lightly.
Im not sure if it was intentional, but the first third gives you a false sense of "safety" which makes the last two thirds all the more shocking.
To be honest the first part is very watchable, with minor uncomfortable moments. I was half expecting the real torture of this film to be waiting for the shockers, after which I would roll my eyes and be done with it. not the case, its well made and decently acted.
Then it kicked in, it goes from 5 to 15 in the blink of an eye. I have seen things I wish I hadnt. every taboo is displayed, ill repeat EVERY taboo is displayed. this movie is that obnoxious kid who always strives to make that crude inappropriate joke, times 10. the only reason im not completely insane right now is due to the fact you never forget youre watching a movie, it never tries to break the fourth wall and convince you "this really happened.".
You win movie, you win.
