Review of A Serbian Film (2010) by Amanda S — 09 Mar 2011
Recommended for lovers of films like Cheaper By The Dozen, The Holiday & Love Actually.
A Serbian Film has got its detractors as vile cinema that aims to shock for its own sake, or hides behind artistic values- cynically in either case.
If you thought it was horrible, that was the point.
It's a profoundly deep and vile rape of the viewer's senses.
I found it a real ordeal, and the bleak as fuck ending leaves a numb shell-shocked feeling.
In my opinion that's its selling point and makes it something more than a horror film or just another Hostel.
The direction is exquisite, as is the cinematography, and I didn't think the film was crass, although it's not devoid of black humour.
Will be mentioned in the same breath as Requiem For A Dream, Irreversible, Antichrist, although should probably not watched in conjunction with, on the grounds you will feel like someone has put your soul in a wheat-thrasher.
Deeply unpleasant, but an extraordinary accomplishment.
