Review of A Separation (2011) by Bryan R — 19 Mar 2012
Magnificently acted, powerfully directed and lensed. I felt more like a voyeur witnessing a complicated and heart-breaking documentary of life in modern middle Iran. But the problems they face and the themes the film tackled - on the veracity of truth, on faith versus the state, on class wars, on pride and hubris (just to name a few), are universal and felt in tiny apartments, broken streets and claustrophobic stairwells across the world.
The twists in the plot are so deftly handled that I found myself switching allegiances at an uncomfortable regularity t/out the film. Did he or didn't he? Why the f^(k won't he just say sorry?? A masterpiece.
