Review of A Separation (2011) by Christina Tina M — 30 Sep 2012
No. 2 in Sight & Sound's 2011 poll, and well worthy of such recognition.
A tense, claustrophobic drama offering an insight into the modern Muslim world. Especially the class tensions you perhaps wouldn't initially consider, and people racking with their religious duty. More importantly the pressures and complexities of family life.
I love that every character is flawed. They're all trying to do the right thing and/or achieve their ends. But because they're human they make mistakes, some which will have tragic consequences. And the relationship between the children of the two warring families is touching.
Class film, check it out.
