Review of A Scanner Darkly (2006) by Brian C — 21 Apr 2012
A Scanner Darkly is a psychological thriller from the mind of science fiction master Philip K. Dick. The story follows an undercover narcotics agent who struggles to cope with reality as his life spirals out of control.
Keanu Reeves, Robert Downy Jr., Winona Ryder, and Woody Harrelson form a stellar cast that is able to deliver strong character performances. Downy's performance in particular is engrossing, and brings a lot of charisma to the screen.
Using rotoscope animation, the film has a distinctive visual style that gives it a sense of surrealness; which is quite fitting for a film about drug culture. As is usual for Philip K. Dick material, the story is laced with themes of paranoia, identity, and a dystopian future.
A Scanner Darkly is a deep, thought-provoking sci-fi thriller, and a compelling drama.
