Review of A Room with a View (1986) by David L — 26 Feb 2010
This is one of those award winning, highly acclaimed, and vastly over rated pictures. The cast is as good as it gets. The acting is all wonderful and it looks good, but clearly lacks direction. The movie moves slow with no mystery or conflict for more than the first half of the film. The dialogue is interesting at times, but never brilliant, and four star movies are supposed to have brilliant dialogue. It all chugs along at a proper British pace with few reasons not to fall asleep.
This movie needed a new screenwriter and director to save it from being humdrum. It is a waste of all those wonderful actors.
Our protaganist has a minor romantic interlude with a unique chap in Italy. Back in England she reunites with her planned future husband who is unusually staid and uptight. But alas her other possible suitor is coming to visit the scene and finally we await this potential conflict. This is after the first hour mind you. I wanted this movie to seduce me as our heroine apparently was, but it failed to do so.
