There are parts in the film where it shows greatness. Robert Redford's directing is spot on. I think I understand what the river symbolizes, the rushing water shows the rapid passing of time, which is something that I think a lot of people may not have noticed.

I think it's also about peoples callings in life, because no matter what happens, the brothers are always called back to the river, because that is the only thing that stays the same in their lives, it may give them a feeling that they are safe or maybe that they can be themselves around it.

I think there is more than one theme in the film, the writing was well done. The acting is good, it's well shot, and pretty engaging. Very old school and likable.
