This might be one of the best films directed by Robert Redford, simply because the plot, which is based on Norman Macleans book, is so difficult to put on screen. The great achievement of Redford is that he depicts the emotions of people unable to express their feelings.

With beautiful photography by Philippe Rousselot, the fly fishing scenes of the film are probably more important to understand the characters of the film. Because when fly fishing they feel more comfortable with themselves.

However, the characters are not meant to be understood, because the narrator cannot understand his brother any better than we can. The meaning of the film is summarized in the last sermon of Tom Skerritt's character: "It is those we love and should know who elude us.

But we can still love them. We can love completely without complete understanding.".
