A River Runs Through It, is a beautiful gem of a movie that has to deal with going with the flow of things, so to speak, even when things turn for the worst. Some people may see this movie and say its about fly fishing, other may see it as a glimpse of a life of a family.
However, because Redford speaks of these events kindly and heartfelt in narration which implies flash back, tells us that the movie is a hindsight view of life and how beautiful but dark the waters of life are.
