Review of A Quiet Place (2018) by Miranda Z — 14 May 2018
Karsinski's directorial debut is an intense, clever and unconventional (at least by current standards) horror film. Bolstered by a great soundtrack, emotional family drama and a masterful performance from Emily Blunt, I can ignore the questionable writing (how/why didn't anybody figure out their weakness earlier? Why did they have unprotected sex?!). Krasinski's good directing also leads me to ignore his less decent acting - it's solid, it just doesn't carry the film. Major props to the dynamic between Blunt and Krasinski, however; one cannot help but be reminded that they are an actual couple through the little moments in the film (the dance scene in particular feels incredibly intimate, which is a wonder for a horror movie).
Also, for a sad horror movie, there are some genuine jumpscares. Now this is a horror movie that does its genre justice!
Come for the great premise, stay for the oxygen-sucking atmosphere.
