Review of A Quiet Place (2016) by Rowell E — 28 Apr 2018
A film set in the post apocalyptic era in the aftermath of an alien invasion that's never clearly or even partially explained. The viewer is left to guess what happened and our only clues are some newspaper clippings that suggest these creatures arrived on meteors...okay.
Credibility is stretched at times, and things are just done that doesn't make sense at times. We are supposed to buy into the idea that this family has survived in the rural area without making any noise, because the alien creatures have super hearing and pick up the slightest sound. I was left to wonder how this farm family was able to plant a large crop of corn without making any noise at all. Why didn't the father build a better sound bunker or devise some early warning devices that would show when the creatures were near. The alien creatures showed up unannounced far too often, and I wondered how this family was able to survive this long.
Naturally, in this movie where making noise will result in certain death, the sound volume in conjunction with the jump scares, seems deafening at times. When one of the alien creatures is fully revealed in the ending scene, it comes off as a bit fake, and the CGI seemed a little bit subpar. We never get to see if these alien creatures are mindless animals, or are they intelligent?
Despite the flaws in the movie, I give it a solid 4 stars base on a good premise and the acting of characters. All the actors turned in a solid performance, and I was very entertained. This is a movie that I would love to see again.
