Review of A Quiet Passion (2016) by Steve C — 20 May 2017
A wonderfully s-l-o-w and judicious screenplay in which every word carries weight. It explores the prevalence of religion and harshness against those who don't toe-the-line. There is an unexpected and highly intelligent sense of humor.
Dickinson didn't have an easy life at school or home, she didn't fulfill expectations of women in that era and faced harsh backlash from her father and other men. She suffered internal disease and Nixon's portrayal is arresting and strenuous.
This is the perfect antidote to the blockbuster season of explosions, corny villains and flying superheroes.
