Review of A Place in the Sun (1951) by Joseph O — 23 May 2005
Wow! Classic movies like this just go to show you that you don't even need color to make a good movie. Montgomery Clift plays a young man who pulls himself up by his bootstraps but makes the mistake of dating two women at the same time - one played by Elizabeth Taylor and the other by Shelly Winters.
Elizabeth Taylor made this movie at age 18, and is not even recognizable as the woman we know today (she was really, really beautiful back then). Shelly Winters, who was actually a sex symbol, does a very good job making herself "frumpy" and believable in her role.
The movie takes a while to get where it's going, but the acting, story, and emotions it evokes are wonderful. "A Place in the Sun," not surprisingly, took home six Oscars.
