Review of A Place in the Sun (1951) by Craig C — 06 Apr 2015
Starring Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters. Overrated and overlong film version of Theodore Dreiser's "An American Tragedy." The good cast compensates, though, which makes the picture worthwhile.
Clift plays a man torn between two women (rich girl Taylor, poor girl Winters). After she dies in a boating accident, Clift is charged with Winters' murder. It's just too melodramatic, and the characters unsympathetic.
Raymond Burr is ridiculously over-the-top as a prosecutor. Directed by George Stevens.
