Review of A Perfect World (1993) by Dave L — 02 Feb 2013
"A Perfect World" is an astounding film and is one of the most underrated movies I can think of. Baffling that this story, direct by Clint Eastwood, did not get more attention after Eastwood's triumph at the Oscars with "Unforgiven".
This story involves escaped convicts taking a young boy hostage. It eventually becomes a meditation on boys who grow up without fathers. Butch (played by Kevin Costner) is one of those convicts who attempts to be a father figure to the little kidnapped boy.
The plot sounds simple but there is so much depth to this picture. Even the theme of the consequence of absent fathers runs deep and complex. Throughout the entire movie, there is a subtle and underlining sense of sadness that strikes from the very opening scene.
One may know where this is all going but getting there will surprise the viewer and leave an unforgettable mark.
