Review of A Passage to India (1984) by Steven K — 11 Jan 2014
You know the drill: lots of gorgeous scenery befitting a bloated, Indian elephant-sized epic, lots of scenes of crowds of the Indian locals either celebrating the pomp and circumstance of the Brits who rule over them in 1924 or, eventally, rioting because they are pissed off at them.
Elephants..monkeys..caves.. British actors on auto-pilot. A sacrificial lamb in the form of a noble Indian doctor accused of a crime he didn't commit against one of the Brits( rather annoyingly over-acted).
This was, for me, a mildly enjoyable movie with a storyline that will make you want to knock the teacup out of some of the pompous Brits' hands, which was just what it was supposed to do. If only Cher had made a cameo at some point, slapped Judy Davis in the face, and said "Snap out of it!".
