Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989) by Richard L — 29 Jun 2008
It's not too bad, but it's clearly a step down from the previous movie and it's not by any means scary. Continuity is nominal, as key elements of the original storyline are kept but nothing new is brought forth and Alice seems to have lost her personality in the meantime.
Also, the acting is bad, character development is nearly non-existent, some parts are erratic (e.g. Freddy's revival and new powers are not explained, as is the whole subplot with Amanda and the obscure symbolism associated with pregnancy) and the narrative structure is getting old by this point.
Some parts are amusing (e.g. Greta's death, Yvonne's fashion excesses of the 80's, Superfreddy), while other look like thinly-disguised public health ads from conservatives (alcohol is bad, teen pregnancy is bad, abortion is bad, single mothers are bad, nuclear family is good, typical roles for women are good).
