Review of A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989) by Andrew E — 11 Oct 2010
This film never gets good reviews and back in the day it was a big flop for the franchise but fuck all that this movie far out shines all the sequels and is the best of them! Much darker and nastier than part 4 and a lot more satisfying than part 3. Robert Englund still makes the silly jokes but there not as many as Dream Masters pun laden nightmare. He seems much more toned down and often residing in the shadows rather than on a sun soaked beach!
The dream sequences are really well shot and very creative, I love the motor bike sequence and would rate it in my top five Freddy kills. Stephen Hopkins really understands horror and creates fantastic Gothic yet industrial landscapes. Lisa Wilcox is much better this time around as Alice. She has much more confidence that really suits the character rather than that creepy shy girl routine seen in part 4.
However all that said it's still got some problems, a creepy child actor delivering Arnie style action lines, Robert Englund shouting "It's a boy!' when he is resurrected which is a really shame because his visual resurrection is fantastic and I don't much care for some of the editing which has clearly been enforced by some awful censors!
But mostly this film Rocks and they should have stayed with this vain of film making for the next in the series.
