Classic entry in the genre that is not only the most balanced of all the movies, but is a great horror film in it's own right. The cast is solid, with marquee names like Patrica Arquette & Laurence Fishburne adding nice gravitas to the film, while Heather Langenkamp's return is most welcome.
Most importantly, they are likable characters who you root for, a necessity for any horror film, thus when they are threatened or even killed, it hurts. Of course, the scene stealer is still Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, who performs with such a mix of terror & entertainment, you're not sure to root for him or hope he dies.
Behind the camera, director Chuck Russell, from a script by him, Wes Craven & even Frank Darabount, crafts a superb horror film mixed with frights & entertainment. Many of Freddy's best kills are here (the puppet scene is a masterpiece of horror) while solidifying the mythology of the series, returning to the power of dreams after the misstep that was "Freddy's Revenge".
Quite frankly, this is the film that the rest of the franchise would model itself after, as it set the standard for the scary but funny Freddy, along with being a true classic horror film.
