Review of A Night to Remember (1958) by Vicky V — 10 Apr 2008
I was unaware of the history of the production of this film and the book upon which it was based when I saw it so I was expecting a cheezy 50's era disaster flick. What it turns out to be is a gripping drama that follows the events of the sinking without overblown melodrama or a focus on spectacular effects.
Watching this it struck me that the later Cameron version may have been as much an homage to this earlier version than it was a story about the sinking, from specific shots seen in both films to actors in the modern version who are spitting images of the actors from the '58 film.
Too bad Cameron thought the actual facts in need of a soap opera love story to liven things up, because this earlier version proves that what actually happened is as interesting and compelling, if not more so.
