Review of A Night at the Opera (1935) by Diana P — 26 Nov 2007
For my first taste of the Marx brothers, I have to admit that I was more impressed than I expected to be. Groucho's quips were far ahead of their time and remain as funny and irreverent as they were 70 years ago.
One almost forgets that they began as a vaudeville music act until the wonderful scene towards the middle where Chico and Harpo are allowed to demonstrate and almost flaunt their musical prowess. Their skill is truly astounding.
The film could have done without the long, drawn-out love story and the sub-par songs, but this movie is a great introduction to the genius that is the Marx Brothers.
