Review of A Night at the Opera (1935) by Nannina G — 10 Jan 2008
The Marx Bros are something that you have to get whole-heartedly into the mood for... I wasn't with this one until the end. I don't know if this was my fault or the film's fault, but something was off.
It does have brilliant moments - the scenery rising and falling as Harpo is chased above the stage swinging on the various ropes controlling them, Chico's piano playing on the boat for the children, but it also has a rather limp musical romance in the middle of it all, which drags down the rest.
All in all I prefer Duck Soup.
