Review of A Night at the Opera (1935) by Brian R — 28 Mar 2009
Pure Marx Brothers magic. It doesn't have the sustained anarchy of "Duck Soup" but then MGM probably wanted something a bit more conventional - there's a love story and a couple of big songs by the romantic leads, but they're actually quite enjoyable.
Too many funny scenes to mention - the stateroom scene, and "The Party of the First Part" are classics, but my favourite is where Chico, Harpo and Allan Jones pretend to be famous aviators at the mayor's reception : "The first time we flew across the ocean, we got halfway then we ran out of gasoline so we had to go back".
