Review of A Night at the Opera (1935) by Simon G — 21 Oct 2009
In my completely subjective opinion, the greatest comedy film ever made. Still unrivaled even in modern times. The perfect balance between visual and verbal comedy. Every single second The Marx Bros. are on screen is packed with comedy genius. Every scene and gag is topped by a funnier scene or gag.
Funnier than "Duck Soup" (again, in my subjective opinion) because it is the Brothers running amok in a realistic setting rather than a surreal one. Which is intrinsically funnier.
The hedonistic anarchy they cause would inspire later American comedies (from the mostly crappy "Animal House" type movies of the late 70's/80's to the mostly crappy Judd Apatow movies of now.) Of course, none of them have ever come close to this masterpiece.
Pure, timeless, universal comedy.
