Review of A Night at the Opera (1935) by Robb K — 22 Dec 2009
I love the Marx Brothers in everything they did, even the later mediocre films, and it was a real toss-up to decide whether to put this movie or "Duck Soup" as my favorite. Ultimately, "A Night at the Opera" is their most accessible movie, while "Duck Soup" appeals mostly to their diehard fans.
The complete unreality of Marx Brothers humor has never been so perfectly meshed with real life situations as this film, where the supporting cast understands exactly how to play straight men to this insane trio.
Often copied, though never successfully imitated, the film is a masterpiece of timing, wit, outrageous sight gags, pacing and satire.
