Review of A Night at the Opera (1935) by Ricardo O — 04 Feb 2010
"The party of the first part shall hereafter be known as the party of the first part...".
A Night At the Opera represents the Marx brothers at the height of their powers. Sam Wood's direction and the hilarious script written by George S. Kaufman, Morrie Ryskind and Al Boasberg are all great. The sight gags are wonderfully hilarious. All three of the remaining brothers are hilarious but it is as always Groucho that steals the show delivering so many hilarious one-liners. I might just consider him to be the king of one-liners after watching this. The film is highlighted by many scenes including the contract scene, the stateroom scene, the bed-switching scene and of course the operatic finale which must be seen to be believed. Fantastic film that ranks as one of the greatest comedies ever made. 10/10.
Driftwood: "That's a sanity clause"; Fiorello: "You no foola me. There ain't no Sanity Claus".
