Review of A Most Violent Year (2014) by Robert S — 18 Jan 2015
Not sure why the huge fuss over this movie. Here's what worked for me: !. Crackling suspense that never really pans out or pays off. 2. Loads of atmosphere but ultimately it feels like a wannabe Godfather.
3. Oscar Isaac gives an amazingly even performance. But that works against him as all I could think was "how would Pacino have done it?" Jessica Chastain is always interesting but I didn't buy her as a ex-mobster's daughter from Brooklyn.
3. Some of the action sequences were good, but some were bordering ridiculous, especially the failed truck heist on the bridge. Best scene: Isaac's character teaching his young sales recruits.
