Review of A Most Violent Year (2014) by Braxton H — 16 Jun 2017
Caught this late night on Amazon Prime and it was a completely wonderful surprise. A subtle, dark period piece, where the title is misleading. Though it is suspenseful, violent it is not. "A Most Violent Year" is reminiscent of the best '70's cinema (think "Serpico" or "The Conversation"), a deliberately-paced character study about a man determined to succeed on his own terms, though business pressures push him to operate outside the bounds of morality/legality.
Oscar Isaac gives a perfect, smoldering, understated performance.
