Review of A Most Violent Year (2014) by John K — 31 Jan 2015
Works as both an interesting character study, as well as an introspective look at the perversion of the American dream, this is not only one of the best films of 2015, but it deserves to be ranked amongst the best crime/mafia films of all time.
Chandor does an amazing job of capturing the feel of grimy 1980's New York, while executing an allegorical script that is able to avoid genre expectations at nearly every turn. Moreover, Oscar Isaac delivers a powerful performance and yet is somehow still upstaged by Jessica Chastain, who dominates every scene she's in.
A must-see film.
