Review of A Most Violent Year (2014) by Ildefonso M — 15 Mar 2015
What. A. Film.
First things first, Oscar Isaac has come such a long way since the abusive/ annoying brute in that catastrophe of a film Sucker Punch. We now see him on screen alongside the always exceptional Jessica Chastain for a wife, and the great Albert Brooks as his accountant. Yeah, I'd want to step up my game too.
He commands his business by allocating an honorable work ethic, a methodical code of conduct in his every move, all in the awfully violent year of 1981, New York. The competition is through the roof, his employees are literally facing mortality on a daily basis, smugglers are hi-jacking his product, and his youngest baby daughter of 4 plays with a loaded handgun she finds in their front yard. And the tension doesn't stop there.
When we see scene sets next to the Hudson river and an undertone of Tommy guns w/ cigars, I was reminded of the beautiful camera work ala On The Waterfront, and dare I even say, The Godfather. What a treat, go watch it, no regrets will be involved. I promise.
