Review of A Man for All Seasons (1966) by Kenneth L — 19 May 2009
A magnificent production. Paul Scofield is superb as the dogged, principled Sir Thomas More. Robert Shaw (of "Jaws") gives a very lively performance as the temperamental king Henry VIII. A very old and fat Orson Welles has a good scene as a slimy cardinal.
And John Hurt, known today for his parts in "V for Vendetta" and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," is quite good as the weaselly Rich. The dialogue is intelligent and quick.
The sets, costumes, music, and so forth are all of the highest quality for the 1960s. I can certainly see how this won Best Picture back then. A well-acted, well-written, enthralling history lesson.
