Review of A Long Way Down (2014) by Désirée S — 02 Jul 2014
From the writer of About A Boy, High Fidelity, Fever Pitch and An Education (only a screenplay was written by Hornsby for that last film) comes A Long Way Down, a dramedy about four down-on-their-luck individuals who all happen to run into one another at the same place -- a London high rise known as Topper's Tower -- on the one night of the year they are each wishing to make a grand exit from life.
There is a disgraced and scandalized TV anchor (Pierce Brosnan - Goldeneye), an isolated single mother (Toni Collette - The Sixth Sense), a rebellious and sad youngster (Imogen Poots - The Awkward Moment) and a self-aggrandizing young man (Aaron Paul - 'Breaking Bad') whose career might be in need of a "jump" start.
Together, the foursome come to their senses rather quickly but their "story" pops up in every sad Sunday morning post in the country. The odd-bit of cosmic kismet aside, the four do take their chance playing the "Instant Celebrity" game rather quickly and when one is willing to sell his/her own soul that quickly I have doubts as to their intentions.
The film is fairly predictable but the cast is all game but there is no really big reason to recommend this to anybody.
