Review of A Little Romance (1979) by Cris B — 14 Jul 2008
My roommate passed along this far-from-ostentatious film (which happens to be Diane Lane's big-screen debut!), calling it "a bit sappy, but sweet." I was pleasantly delighted by this "gem," which left me feeling as refreshed by "innocent" and "real" love as films like Il Postino and Cinema Paradiso, both foreign films that I adore.
A Little Romance offers the budding "young love" of two intelligent thirteen-year-olds in France and Italy, led by their "chaperone" and loveable pick-pocket, the great Laurence Olivier.
At times, the film seems a bit comic and treacly, but the spirit behind it is whole-hearted and honest--something you don't find in many of today's films. For those who enjoy "foreign" fare, light-yet-true-love, and want to remember innocent days of young love, this film is perfect.
