Review of A Life Less Ordinary (1997) by Maggie B — 11 Aug 2007
It had been a long time since I'd seen this film. Yesterday was the first instance that I watched it as an actual movie (instead of -- let's face it -- an excuse to look at Ewan McGregor, which was the reason my middle-school self bought it in the first place).
I'm not actually so thrown off by the preposterousness of the finale, because, after all, I'm accustomed to Danny Boyle at this point (have you SEEN the ending to 'Millions'? have you SEEN IT???).
My main problem is that this 'romantic comedy' doesn't entirely succeed at being either romantic or comical. The only decent laughs are garnered by Maury Chakin as the nosy backwoods Mormon ("I only watch the biblical channels"), and Boyle's cinematic A.
D.D. prevents any real concentration on the love aspect. However, Cameron Diaz is so convincing in her part that it's disturbing, and McGregor as Robert does actually seem like the sort of guy who would be writing a trash novel about the daughter of Marilyn Monroe and JFK.
Other than a strong cast, though, this is a far cry from "Trainspotting.".
