Review of A Late Quartet (2012) by Janet F — 24 Nov 2012
I enjoyed the music in this film and the actors did an exquisite job of portraying musicians. What I found unconvincing was the affairs that took place. The hot, young, sexy dancer being attracted to the pudgy, older second violinist made no sense to me.
Then the serious first violinist falling for the immature hot, sexy blond...again just not realistic in any way. Why turn a serious character into a joke? It just didn't work. And then the daughter rants at her mother for choosing her career over her.
She cries about how awful it was growing up without a mother, but both her parents were in the quartet...it would have been more realistic if she had cried about growing up without parents, not just without a mother.
These aspects of the story spoiled my opinion of it. Zilberman made a fantastic movie about a string quartet, but he should have done some consulting for the choices he made for his secondary characters.
