Review of A Late Quartet (2012) by Michael T — 25 Nov 2012
A common thread of criticism is that this movie seems like a soap opera. The fact is that most people's lives are lived as a soap opera which is one reason for the popularity of the genre. distinction must be made tat there are profound and shallow soap operas.
Profound in the sense that one finds resonance in one's own inner life, with the characters represented. Unlike most cheap soap operas there is intellectual honesty in this film where the complex threads of emotions between the characters of the string quartet reflect the complexity of the wide range of emotions in Beethoven's masterpiece.
The direction, acting and of course the music is first rate in this film. With all the heavily promoted blockbusters of this season, this movie stands out as a memorable gem.
