Review of A Late Quartet (2012) by Etienne B — 16 Oct 2013
An emotionally and musically intricate vignette of life, masterly acted and presented. Artistically well integrated and enhanced by all the essential elements of the medium. The screenplay is brilliant.
The singular vocal snatch from Korngold's Die tote Stadt supports the spooky winter scenery of the city empathising with the spiritual crises of the plot. Its humanity is crowned by the final scene where the four decide they do not need the sheet music to give their best performance and meaningfully close the music books emphasising the closure of a late tome in the life of the quartet.
