Review of A Hologram for the King (2016) by Marvin M — 21 Apr 2016
Tom Hanks has been able to remain on top while growing older. Many actors can't do that. However, once in awhile he'll give you an ok performance. This is one of those performances. That's not his fault with this one, but it is what is.
This movie has a tough time figuring out what it wants to be. It's a coming of age, a culture clash, and a love story. They mingle with each other. That's usually a bad thing. The plot tends to lag because of that.
Which this one does. The plot isn't bad, but whenever the movie changes gears the plot sticks a little. At its core, it's a culture clash movie. The movie has a positive take on Christianity and Muslim differences.
Rather than focusing on the negatives. It shows you that we're not that different after all. The second culture is the success and failure one. Tom Hanks represents the failure and the future city is the success.
Like I said, the plot isn't bad it just lags a little. The writers threw in some references to Tom Hanks best performances. I think that's adorable. To that point, Hanks usually pees in the better movies and he doesn't do that.
Overall, it's a decent movie. Could've been better, could've been worse. Would I add this movie to my collection? Yes I would.
