Review of A History of Violence (2005) by Jarrett M — 31 Mar 2012
A History of Violence was a little better of a movie than I was expecting. I personally have never really enjoyed watching David Cronenberg's movies, although I do respect him as a film maker. I did enjoy this one though.
I can't comment on how faithful it is to it's source material, but I found the story presented here to be interesting and easy to follow. The performances were very good across the board, but the film is really carried by Viggo Mortensen and Maria Bello.
William Hurt also gives a memorable performance despite his short amount of screen time. I was also a bit surprised that this film clocks in at just over ninety minutes, but the faster than expected pacing keeps the story moving and there is little to no filler present to stretch out time.
While this is a movie that I would recommend, it wasn't mind blowing and may not be to everyone's taste. The violence is pretty brutal and bloody, more so than I was expecting for this kind of film.
If you enjoy well performed, more cerebral action/thriller/drama's, than you will probably like this. Worth a look, in my opinion.
