Review of A Goofy Movie (1995) by Jon T — 24 Jul 2008
Shortly after producing a terrific but grossly underrated theatrical release of DUCKTALES, Disney followed up with A GOOFY MOVIE, which, like its predecessor, plays out like an extended episode of the show it's based on, "Goof Troop" albeit with (slightly) better production values.
Although less action-packed than the former film, A GOOFY MOVIE still manages to provide good entertainment and a surprisingly in-depth development of the Goof's relationship with his angst-ridden teenage son Max as they set off on a cross country vacation.
The differences between the two could not be greater--Goofy wants to go fishing, while Max would rather be on stage with his rock and roll idol, Powerline (a sort of Prince-Michael Jackson hybrid with an electrifying singing voice by Tevin Campbell).
Audiences expecting a nostalgic Goofy will probably be disappointed, but fans of the TV show and Goofy in general will adore it. There's even some catchy songs, the best of which are the Powerline numbers, "I 2 I" and "Stand Out", sung with zest by Campbell, respectively.
Ahyuck!
