Review of A Goofy Movie (1995) by Jenna I — 24 Jun 2016
The music in this movie is terrible and it unfortunately doesn't hold up throughout. However, the characters, the message and the animation are all pretty well done.
Its certainly captures a 90s time-and-place feel along with that specific time where children are trying to feel out the boundaries of what having their own lives actually means. Goofy comes across as this sad divorcee kind of dad, who grew up in a simpler time with simpler parents and can't seem to navigate middle class life. Where as Max is embarrassed of his fathers lack of education and inability to fit in with the status quo. That dynamic, along with the coming-of-age story line is completely interesting, though maybe a little strange when applied to Goofy.
However, the movie drops the ball at the end by setting up not only a terrible musical number but a stupid waterfall plot-device that just undercuts the sincerity of the 'lesson' by being too high-stakes out there for a movie thats about such a small, personal story. All in all, better than the original reviews but not well rounded enough to be up to Disney-par.
