Review of A Ghost Story (2017) by Movie G — 09 Oct 2017
I'm going to be rather blunt. The audience reviews for this film are lukewarm because most people are stupid and shallow. They can't tolerate something that's not formulaic and familiar. The average critic's review of this film is high because most critics have better taste than the average audience member.
And when I say "better taste", I mean a tolerance for subtlety, ambiguity, difference, and open-ended questions. I liked this movie very much, but it didn't seem at all strange to me, as it will to most people.
I've asked the same questions, and imagined the same things about life, the meaning of our existence, and ghost stories. At a certain point in the film, books come crashing off of a bookshelf. The titles that are easily readable are Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms and Gabriel García Márquez's Love in the Time of Cholera.
The film opens with a quote from Virginia Woolf, from her story, A Haunted House. If you've read all of these books before watching this movie, then you will likely appreciate the movie.
