Review of A Ghost Story (2017) by Charlie H — 14 Aug 2017
A Ghost Story (2017) is a beautiful film about loss, and the innate desire for human connection. I left the cinema with what felt like a lead weight at the pit of my stomach. 24 hours on from seeing A Ghost Story, I'm still struggling to put labels on my feelings and my thoughts into words.
It's a very special film. The film moves with its own mysterious, artful grace that is just as harrowing and emotionally affecting as the content of the story being told. A Ghost Story makes the heart and mind churn.
It's ambitious and successful in its exploration of the passing of time and the meaning of life itself. It's not 'frightening' in the conventional sense, but the questions it poses are scary.
It strikes the chords of fear and insecurity surrounding death that lie within all of us. The score captures twinges of grief as successfully as the cast, and the image of the motionless white-sheet ghost is at times unbearably powerful.
A Ghost Story (2017), I'm so happy to say, is the first film released this year to receive a thoroughly deserved 5 star rating.
